Mrs Gold was too engrossed in her discussion with Iris that she didn't quickly notice when Fred and Lucy came in.
She jerked back when the door closed.
"Oh, sorry if we interrupt anything" Fred said trying to turn back
"Oh no, nothing" she smile waving off her hand
"I've been expecting you too"
Just then, the door opened and a doctor came in.
"Hello Mrs Gold" he smile extending his hand for a greet
"Hi Doc" she smiled and took his hand
"How are you doing?"
"Good. Please what about my daughter," she said placing her hand on Iris shoulder
"I hope she'll be good"
"It's not something really expensive, just a minor accident that took place when she's already close to the hospital so she'll be fine" he smiled
"Thanks Doctor Tom" Iris smiled at him
"My pleasure Doctor Gold" he gave a light nod and continued "but we have urgent matter now which will greatly need your help"
Iris sat up on the bed to listen while the other trio was looking confused and wondering what type of urgent matter will they have to call a patient to attend to. Though Iris doesn't look that confused, it seems she seems to understand why. Iris as the best surgeon in the hospital has had to face and always respond quickly to any emergency she's called to.
"Doctor Kim and Ryan has been called to work on the patient but things got out of hand some minutes ago and the patient is dying. We don't have any other choice but to call you to operate him"
"What?" Fred exclaimed
"You mean you want a patient to work?"
"We're sorry sir but Doctor Gold is the best surgeon so far in this hospital and the only one who can get this done" Doctor Tom said apologetically, meanwhile Iris had uncovered the bedsheets and was about putting her leg down
"Iris?" Fred called but she just looked up and smile at him
"Don't worry Fred, I've got this and I can do it"
Fred was not really looking happy with this but he moved to Iris to help her to stand to her feet while she slipped her footwear on, Mrs Gold was on the her other side holding lightly onto her shoulders as she helped her with her footwear.
Iris chuckled at the sight "you guys should worry less, I got this and I'm fine" she moved to take her coat which was being hanged behind Fred but he caught it first, his face still looking gloomy and worried. He patiently wore it for her while Iris couldn't help but stare at him while he do this
"Be careful Iris" he said almost in a whisper and Iris could feel her cheek fluttered at the feel of his breath, she smiled and looked up to him and their gaze met. Immediately, she forgot about the presence of her Mother behind her, Lucy's eyes on them, the doctor's and the emergency she needed to attend to, it seems he's the only one present there with her, and from his gaze, they're the only present there.
Tom let out a light cough as if clearing his throat to bring them back and it worked.
Iris quickly turned her head towards Tom. Swiftly, she shuffled her hands into her overcoats pocket and that was when she realized Fred had been holding her hand. She heaved a sigh and followed Tom
She smiled at Lucy when she got to her side and she hugged her and whispered to her ears "Be careful iris". Iris nodded and patted her back before breaking the hug and left with Tom
The silence in the room after Iris and Tom had gone was later broken by Mrs Gold who sat on the sickbed.
"I know no matter how she was convinced or even begged, she wouldn't back off from going to operate on the patient"
"You mean?" Fred asked looking at her while Iris took a seat beside her
"Iris is my daughter, so I know her very well enough. She's so stubborn and obstinate which was what got her disowned by her Dad"
"What?" Fred and Lucy exclaimed but Fred's voice seems higher. From Walker, he'd been made to know that Iris and her Dad were having some misunderstanding, not disowned.
"Why?" Fred asked and Lucy turned her head from Fred back to her for her explanation
"Well, it's not a story I'll like to tell cause it's what we've concealed within the family" she shrugged
"But you can trust us right?" Lucy said with her eyes furrowed
A smile flickered on her face and she replied "I feel I can" and with a serious expression she added " If only articles wouldn't later bring it out"
"Trust us" Fred said and she continued
"Well, it's just a small family issue but my husband will never take that as it is. He expected his order to be followed in the family especially the fact that he want all his children in business line. Iris was his favourite and he wanted her to take after him but when she stubbornly refused and headed to the medical line, he disowned her"
"That's too bad" Lucy scowled
"Yeah" she shrugged and sighed. As she was about proceeding on her words, her phone buzzed and she brought it out of her bag to check.
"Sorry, it's some urgent work i need to attend to as soon as possible" she said as she stood up
"It's okay" Lucy replied and she smiled at her
"Nice meeting you again Lu..." She trailed off trying to recall
"Lucy" Lucy chipped in
"Yeah Lucy" she laughed and turning to Fred, he quickly replied
"Fred"
"Yeah, Fred. Sorry I couldn't recall it as soon as possible"
"It's okay" Fred's deep voice came at her
"You guys are really nice and I enjoyed my company with you" she smiled
"I hope we could meet again to discuss more better and get to know each other. I hope you don't mind inviting you over to dine with my family?" She asked with her eyes from Fred and to Lucy
"No, not really" Lucy shook her head and her smile became broader
"Thanks" she said as she dipped her hand into her bag and extended a card to her
"You can reach me on my personal line there and the address is below the contact" she said and her phone buzzed again
"I'll really be happy if you could call" she added as she gave her a light hug which flattered Lucy a little before she left
"She's nice, isn't she?" Lucy said
"Nice" Fred snapped as he sat on the chair beside the bed
"I know it's not in your dictionary" Lucy rolled her eyes and tucked the card in her pocket
"You're getting me wrong now, right?"
"Whatever" she snorted as she sat up on the bed
"Now tell me, whatever that plan you have with Carl is, that you guys have kept I and iris in the dark all these while?" She asked of a sudden getting him surprised and taking back.
"I..I.." he paused and sighed
"Now you're not only getting me wrong but you're getting everything wrong"
"Just answer my question" she queried with her arms folded.
"We aren't keeping you guys in the dark. Just trying to keep you safe from..."
His phone rang and he slide it to check the caller,
"I'm sorry I have to pick this first" he said as he stood up and walked a bit farther away from her. He picked the call and place it to his ear
"Hey Carl" he started and he could bet Lucy's ear narrowed at the mention of that name, even though she can't eavesdrop on their conversation, she can still hear him.
"Hey dude, where went you guys that you can't even leave a note for me" Carl's voice came in
"Sorry man" he winced
"We're in the hospital"
"Hospital!" He exclaimed
"What happened?"
"Iris had an accident"
"Oh jeez! Seriously? How's she?"
"Nothing much, it's just a minor one"
"Oh thanks goodness. Where are you, let me come over then"
"No no, you don't need to worry, we'll be coming back soon" Fred paused and wanted to add "can you believe they asked a patient to come and work out a complicated issue and you think I'll still leave her here so they could come back in the next five minutes to call her again, again and again?" But he bite back his words at the sight of Lucy's glare at him, he knows what that mean. The conversation is already taking time and now if he should bring that topic up, his call with the talkative Carl wouldn't probably end in time.
"Is she all healed?" Carl asked
"We'll talk about that when we get home Carl" he said and the line soon got disconnected
"Nice one" Lucy commended as she approached her
"You should understand..." He started saying but she cut in
"You haven't answer my question"
"Oh that!" He said as he raked his hand through his hair
"Yeah that" she snapped
"You should take it easy Lucy. These are just for the good of all of us" he paused and when she didn't say anything, he continued "Anderson and Arthur are going back to Paris soon and the plan is that Carl and I are going back too, on the same day?"
"What?" Lucy exclaimed with her expression full of surprises
"How do you know this?"
"Internet. They got to inform the workers in Paris of their change of geographic area but..." He paused and stopped
"But what?" Lucy scowled
"Nothing" he shook his head and leaned on the wall where the sickbed's headboard laid
Lucy paused for a while, looking confused and furious "so when are they going?" She finally asked
"In two days time"
"What? You're travelling in two days time and I don't even know about this?"
"It's just urgent that's why? And it doesn't seems we're going for fun"
"Either we're going for fun or not is not my business but that we're going together. Listen Fred, don't act as if you got this alone. Yeah, it's true you got to witnessed dad's death and I know how painful that could be but I want you to know you're not in this alone. My Dad was killed, I grew up fatherless not even chance to know him or receive a father's love" Lucy stopped as tear dropped from her eyes, she'd been raising her voice unintentionally
"I'm sorry Lucy" he said drawing near to her
"I understand you but the justice on these people is what we want and I and Carl can we work it out for us"
"Or maybe we can work it out together" Iris' voice came from behind them.
