"She said you guys are best of friend" Walker said as they walked out of the ward, it's obvious they're starting to become friends
Fred' face quickly soften at the realization that Iris had only told her brother few things that might be necessary and not about his family, could he possibly be afraid that she might expose that? Yeah maybe he'd trusted Carl and Iris too much to have tell them too much about his life and family but nevertheless he didn't regret doing so. He could at least trust somebody, especially Carl. And Iris is just an innocent and sweet lady who seems harmless.
Oh! did he just qualify her as a sweet lady? Well, maybe. But he knows enough that he'd feel there's something about her, about iris which he's yet to know. Truly, his first encounter with her was when he'd saved her from those bad eggs in school, they'd ambushed her in one of the most silent corner in the school where people rarely pass through especially at that night, Fred could remember he'd contemplated between taking the normal route and had finally taken the silent one to avoid some female stalkers who had qualified him as a lonely type and was inviting him over to club, maybe he wouldn't have be able to save her that day and possibly, no one will cause the place was really silent and he was the only one passing at that moment they'd wanted to abuse her sexually. He could remember Iris lingering around her and stalking him each and everyday afterwards just to appreciate but he has just taken that as an overreaction from the innocent pretty lady and he'd let her know he shouldn't be thanking him but the coincidence. Yeah the coincidence saved her cause if he'd not pass the route, he wouldn't have coincide with the incident and wouldn't have been there to save her but nevertheless the pretty obstinate Iris refused to take that as 'it's okay of your lingering and stalking " but she kept trying to chat him up, ask him out for coffee, lunch or dinner which he later accepts after decades of unsuccessful turn down. He knew Iris was really happy that day he'd accepts they go out for lunch with her and when he'd call Carl to join them since they use to eat together then it'd been like a reunion for both of them.
"You know she told me about how you guys meet in college"
Walker continued after a long pause. Both of them had gone out of the elevator and had started taking walk round. They stopped when they got out and sat on one of the bench. All this while Fred had just been nodding at his words mostly and he'd said small. Maybe when it's necessary.
"She told you?" Fred asked as if surprised, he knew it's not something to be surprised of because when the latter had told him Iris had say a lot about him and as best friend, then it surely will involved the first time they met, how he'd saved her from those motherfuckers.
"Yeah" Walker nodded lightly and with a smile on his face, he faced Fred, his smile widened and for the first time, Fred think he must be a good guy. Well he'd always thought almost those involved in business always get their hands dirty just Like Anderson's. The thought of him just made his stomach rumbled in despise.
"Thank you man" he added and continued
"I shouldn't be saying this but just because you are a friend." He paused again, is Walker really having a difficulty in beginning a discussion? Fred thought.
" Dad is not really happy with Iris" he finally said
"What? Why?" Fred find himself suddenly asking with a real interest
"Well, dad wanted all the family in a business line but Iris had refused, she had this passion for becoming a doctor so she took up a medical course instead and ever since then Dad had become distant and as cold as possible to her" he paused as if to catch his word then continue "so ever since then she'd refused to come home. She was dad's favourite so she received even the love I don't from Dad but one thing Dad would never like is his children not heeding to his words, commands or maybe rules, he believed he's always the head you know like Dad used to do?" He scoffed nudging him at his shoulder and expecting the same reaction from him but his face fell
"I don't really grow up with my Dad to know that" he muttered
"Oh,, I'm sorry" Fred quickly said as if he'd committed the biggest sin in the world
"I'm really sorry, I don't know"
"It's okay" Fred cuts in with a smile, this will actually be the first time walker see him smile and he wonder how foolish he was not to have see this coming
"It'll have been so hard growing up without him" he said pitifully
"It doesn't mean, I'm used to it" Fred laughed this time and just when Walker was about talking Lucy showed up, she'd been running or should we say jogging, the end of her hair that was parked in ponytail was stucked to her right wet neck after enough swift around and she was breathing heavily
"Hey take it easy Lucy" Fred said as she was about falling on him so she sat beside him
"What's wrong?"
"Mom, she called again" she said, her heavy breathing reducing.
